Productive Politics: A Respectful Discussion About How the Newly Passed Legislation Affects Self-Employed Parents

30 Mar

Friday, April 2, 2010 at 6pm EST (3pm PST)

Do we dare talk politics even at an attempt to stay neutral? Is it even possible right now?

There are heated disputes and vicious bickerings all around us. Arrows are being flung back and forth between friends and family members on Facebook, Twitter has become a mass of short and sweet cheap shots, and it is all at the ironic expense of our nation’s health (pun intended). Most American’s have not even read the health care reform bill, and yet they have no problem delivering their arrogant and uninformed “expertise”.
(I admit, I am one of them.)
Given the acrimonious state of the people on BOTH sides, you may think its not possible to discuss government or policy in a neutral way…but I’d like to try. It’s important that we learn what the bill is about before scratching each other’s eyes out…and maybe, just maybe…we’ll lose the desire to grapple once we realize…we are not nearly as divided as we thought.
*Julianne Wish may not be of the same political affiliation as myself, but we are friends and colleagues who have at least one shared goal: Becoming more united as parents and entrepreneurs, becoming less divided in the political arena, and striving to gain as much real information as we can to obtain a true understanding of our current situation and what it might mean for our future.  (Er, make that 3 shared goals). We are both passionate advocates for parents and their children.  So, if our goals are truly the same, its just a matter of finding the best way to get there. It is my hope that we’ll have such a productive discussion that we’ll be showing D.C. how it should be done.
I have invited Julianne, who is one of the few people I know to have actually read the bill, to speak with us about the newly passed legislation, and help us to see how it will affect us personally, our families and our small businesses. There will be no battling or battering, and we will keep our personal opinions out. Instead, we will be working together to represent the facts without the slant, and explore the components without the criticisms.
We know there is conflict. Our intention is not to add to it. Nor is it to convince you to choose one side over the other.
The intent is to give you the tools you need to understand the health reform bill and how it affects YOU. Perhaps we’ll get really lucky and it will advance us one step further toward our own goal of becoming less divided.

We will be opening up the phone lines for those who would like to contribute to the educational aspect of the discussion, or to pose a well considered question. Donnybrooks are not appropriate and will not be tolerated.

Everything You Want to Know About Direct Sales (But Were Afraid to Ask!)

24 Mar

Friday, March 26, 2010 at 6pm EST (3pm PST)

Lately, it seems as if everyone is either doing it, or avoiding those that are.

and began listing self-employed parents in the business directory, there were a few skeptics who wanted to know if my community was going to include any direct sales businesses (also known in some parts of the industry as MLMs or Multi-Level Marketing). If so, they did not want to be listed.
Why?  It almost seemed like just one more way the country was trying to divide itself. On one hand, I couldn’t pretend that I didn’t understand the stigma that goes along with a Direct Sales Home Based Business. On more than one occasion I’d been a victim who was cornered by a new starry-eyed direct sales rep at a social event- when the 10 second elevator pitch turned into 10 hours.
On the other hand, I knew that I couldn’t deny these businesses a place in our community because lets face it, many of these home based businesses gave parents the freedom to take care of their families on their own terms. Not to mention that their products made it very easy for me to transition my purchasing habits.
Which side was I on anyway? Apparently you either support direct sales or you don’t. I began to feel as if I had to choose.
The purpose of This Little Parent Stayed Home is to help parents find a practical income opportunity in an effort to transition from corporate America to work-at-home parent. While I know from experience that many of these” opportunities” are merely a way to make someone else rich from your hard work, often its the least expensive way to start a home-based business…and in most cases a large portion of the work is already done FOR YOU.

Yet again we have another topic that is simply NOT TALKED about anywhere else..so of course, I want to talk about it.

To help me talk about the MLM controversy, I have invited Mona Colwell* to join us. As a director in her field of a nationwide group for more than 15 years,  Mona recently transitioned to the country’s first ever non-toxic line of skin care, Ava Anderson Non-Toxic. When I first met Mona, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that she did not have the high-pressure approach that I had been exposed to in the past and doing business with her was always an enjoyable experience. I was impressed with her candor and her outstanding attention to customer satisfaction.  I know when you meet her you’ll see why she is the perfect guest for this week’s topic. Mona has agreed to “tell it like it is” for the benefit of all those who are considering this line of business to supplement the family income or perhaps those that are already involved in an MLM business and are looking to break down negative stereotypes. Without mentioning any specific direct sales companies, we will be discussing all that is not typically talked about: The pros and cons of the direct sales industry, the red flags, the way to know if it’s right for you and your family, and all the things you always wanted to know but were afraid to ask.

Call ins are encouraged! We absolutely want to hear your opinions!

Call the guest line to chat with us: 877-864-4869

(*For the purposes of keeping the show neutral, we discourage listeners from calling the show for the intention of plugging an MLM business. All callers will be pre-screened.)

I hope you are looking as forward to Friday as I am!

Are you good at being a parent?

17 Mar

This week’s topic is:
Balancing, Managing, Surviving
…and Staying Sane – part II.

Friday, March 19, 2010 at 6pm EST (3pm PST)

Are you good at being a parent? Or do you often wonder how to do it as well as the other parents you see out and about? If you feel like your toddler is starting to get the better of you…this next show is a MUST!!!

Are we all just going insane?
The response to Last Week’s Broadcast was so great, that it became clear to me the discussion needed to continue. I received an abundance of letters and responses from listeners who were relieved to know that they are not the only one who is feeling the pressure to fit more into a day than is humanly possible. Wendy Young, of Kidlutions.com, writes “How great of you to put yourself out there, embrace it…and share it with so many who can relate. You have “normalized” a bit of our human~ness…the pieces of ourselves that make us so dang human…and imperfect…and I think that is just PERFECT in and of itself!”

As proud as I am that we have raised our expectations of ourselves, it’s important to understand the consequences of “trying to do it all.” As parents, very often we forget to take care of ourselves, and the family as a whole ends us suffering as a result.
As always, this show is meant to help you laugh, but also will give you the tools to use in your own circumstances that will prevent you from taking a trip to the “looney bin”. Still, many parents seemed to be a bit envious of my experience:
Jan Hall writes, “I’d say you were pretty lucky!  I’d give anything to be locked away for 3 days.”

In addition to wrapping up my tale of nuttiness, this week, I will be sharing another personal experience with you that I believe so many will also relate to: How I went from dealing with my overactive, temper tantrum throwing, loud and very difficult 2 1/2 year old, wondering every second of everyday how in the world a toddler was getting the best of me, to enjoying every moment with the sweetest and most well behaved little boy anyone had ever seen…in a matter of days. The Secret? My very good friend, Shannon Penrod shared with me her knowledge of “behavioral therapy” which is the very same tactics that are used with children who have Autism, and essential for any struggling new parent to obtain.
These unknown little tricks “fixed” my day to day routine with my son…and I thanks to her, I was able to enjoy my little boy again, rather than dreading my time with him. I can now say with the utmost confidence,  that I am really good at being a mom. The results are immediate and simply amazing!! *Shannon Penrod, host of Everyday Autism Miracles will be joining us as a guest this Friday and will be sharing these valuable and underutilized techniques with you. Got a personal question for Shannon? Call ins are encouraged! 877-864-4869
Have a great week, and we will see you on Friday!

*Shannon Penrod is a writer, speaker, radio show host and Autism advocate.  When her son, Jem was diagnosed with Autism in 2006, Shannon made a commitment to helping her son and then helping as many other children and families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders as possible. Jem’s journey through Autism has taught Shannon and her husband so much about behavior, parenting and the boundless capacity to love. Happily, Jem is well on the way to recovering from Autism. Now as the host of Everyday Autism Miracles, a live talk radio show on Autism, Shannon weekly reaches a global audience of parents and practitioners looking for information and inspiration.  Her guests are experts in the field of Autism and parents whose children are making miraculous strides.  Past guests include Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh, founder of CARD (The Center for Autism and Related Disorders), Special Education Attorney Bonnie Yates of the Bonnie Z. Yates Law Firm and Karyn Seroussi, author of The Enclyopedia of Dietary Interventions for Autism and Related Disorders.  Free podcasts of the show can be downloaded at www.toginet.com/shows/everydayautismmiracles

Embracing Drama

15 Mar

Drama has been with me for so long, I don’t even remember where we first met. I think it was sometime during elementary school because by the time I was in junior high, it was sitting next to me in every class, eating lunch with me, and keeping me company while I walked home from school each day.
It started out shyly stalking me. It followed me wherever I went and hid behind bushes and buildings so that I wouldn’t see it. But I always knew it was there. At first, Drama was just sort of annoying to me, and then its presence began to torment me to the point where I’d try to avoid it at all costs, outsmart it, or hide from it by getting lost in a crowd of people and disguising myself as no one special… but Drama always found me. I tried to reason with Drama, asking it to leave me alone, locking it out my bedroom, and refusing to feed it or nurture it. I had hoped that it would just give up and find someone else to pursue, but nothing worked. Like a lost puppy, it had found its home with me, stayed loyal to me and waited outside all night in the cold for me, happily wagging its tail the moment it saw me. It would continue to tag along side me, each and every day. Some days Drama was more present than others, but it never left my side.
Drama came with me to high school, stayed all 4 years, and then followed me out of state to college. It lived with me and all of my college roommates, in the dorm, the sorority house and even in my first apartment. It stood next to me at graduation, was there when I took my first job, my second job, and pretty much every job after that. Eventually I just began taking Drama with me to job interviews so that potential employers wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Drama would be following me to work each day. Some employers graciously accepted it, and others did not.
Often when I went out with friends, Drama would be there. It accompanied me on blind dates, to parties, or even just out to the movies by myself. Drama has lived with me at every apartment, condo or house that I’ve had. It’s made its way into every group I’ve gotten involved with, and every friendship or romantic relationship that has come into my life. Drama was there when I first met my husband, on the day that he proposed and it even made several appearances on our wedding day. Drama has been living with my husband and I ever since.
It’s with us on weekdays and weekends, it joins us on all of our family vacations, holidays, and special events. We brought it with us when we purchased our first house, when we bought new cars, and whenever we have changed jobs or careers. Drama was with us when my husband and I decided to start a family. It stayed by my bedside throughout both of my pregnancies and was there at the hospital the day both my children were born.
Drama has become such a part of our lives, that if it ever left us, we’d feel that there is something missing. Some people seem put off by the fact that Drama comes with us wherever we go, acting almost as if they are allergic to it, afraid to go near it, or even hoping that if they ignore it won’t exist. Others have been very accepting of it, and have come to understand that it is part of who we are. We have embraced Drama as a member of the family, and honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
It’s taken some time, but we’ve learned to be grateful to Drama for being present in our lives. It’s because of Drama that we’ve become the well-rounded, seasoned and experienced people that we are today. Drama has taught us love and acceptance, how to lower our expectations, strive for growth, take risks and have a sense of humor about ourselves. It has shown us the difference between good friends and GREAT friends, brought us together with those we love during times of anger and sadness, war and disease, and other life tragedies. It has shown us that we are resilient, even during our most vulnerable times. It has introduced us to new people and situations, and taken us on journeys, both thrilling and exciting, that we never expected to go on. Drama has given us incredible material for our acting careers, our one-person shows, our books and our blogs. It has inspired us to create, invent, take risks, start new business ventures, and connect with others who also have Drama, similar to ours, in their lives.
We love to tell stories about Drama and do so over and over again at family reunions, and Thanksgiving Dinners. We will continue to pass the stories down to our children through the generations. Drama has brought laugher into our lives, as well as tears.
It’s because of Drama that we are who we are, where we are, how we’ve come to choose so many of the paths we’ve taken in our lives, and even how we’ve learned to survive. Drama has been documented in our history books, our newspapers and magazines. It is in our favorite TV shows and movies, the books we read, and even the commercials we watch.
Drama is everywhere we are, and once we embrace it, we are able to realize how it has nurtured us, emerged us into new opportunities and possibilities, teaching us how to make lemonade out of lemons.
We love Drama, and we are not ashamed to admit it, as others may be.
I have grown to feel sad for the people who don’t have at least a little Drama in their lives, and wonder how boring and empty their lives must be. Although, Drama has been known to follow others from time to time…even those that deny they know anything about it, lurking in the shadows and showing up when they least expect it. I know how Drama must frighten them, but I also know that they have nothing to be afraid of.

But it’s the people that have welcomed Drama into their lives that seem the healthiest, the least threatened and the most blissful. Drama is a gift.

Air date and Time:
Friday, March 12, 2010 at 6pm EST (3pm PST)

You have just started your own business, and there is 3 times the amount of work that you expected, you have 2 kids under the age of 3, a mortgage that isn’t getting any smaller, a household to run… and only 12 hours in a day….

How are you supposed to handle all of this without going insane?

~~~~~~
Please don’t call me “Supermom”
I don’t have any super powers, and I certainly have a breaking point just like the rest of the world.
There is a misconception among work-at-home parents that we have to do it all, and have it done YESTERDAY. The more moms and dads I speak to, the more I realize we are all very similar. Parents today are simply amazing- but then again we HAVE to be. Of the parents that I know that are working full time- or even part time- and raising a family and a household, none of them are doing it just because it’s fun for them, or because they were looking to do MORE in their lives. Most of us are doing it because it’s what is necessary for our families to survive in today’s world. Our families need us to try and bring in a supplemental income because one income is not enough. Not even those with college degrees and higher educations are able to provide for their families on one income. It’s not their fault, and we certainly don’t blame them. It’s just the way it is.
Before you choose to let someone who seems to be able to do it all overawe you and minimize what you know you are capable of doing, LOOK CLOSER. If there are days that you feel you are barely staying afloat, take a moment and look at the others in your very same pool treading water. Perhaps they are looking at YOU and wondering how you got YOUR superpowers. Pat yourself on the back, because you have accomplished something today.
This week, with guest *Lori Lite, owner of Stress Free Kids we will be discussing how easy it is to let yourself get overwhelmed, and how to manage your time between running a new business, caring for your children and running a household. It’s hard work, but for many parents, the hardest part is scheduling time to take care of your own health. This is such an important topic, and my hope is that you’ll come away from this show feeling less stress and more confidence in your abilities as a parents and as business owners. See you then!
P.S. Lori will be giving away her well known Indigo Dreams:3 CD set, valued at $39.00 to one lucky caller on the show. Call 877-864-4869 to talk with Lori and for a chance to win the prize!
*Lori Lite is the creator of  Stress Free Kids – a line of books, CDs and curriculums designed to help children manage anxiety, stress, and anger while promoting self-esteem and peaceful sleep. Ms. Lite’s books, CDs, and curriculums are considered a resource for parents, psychologists, therapists, child life specialists, teachers, and yoga instructors throughout the world. She is a certified childrens meditation facilitator and her Indigo Dreams audio book/CD series now introduces children, teens and adults to relaxation.  Lori received national attention on ABC’s Shark Tank, a Mark Burnett Production and is Sears’ parenting expert. Celebrating Hollywood Baskets 1st Annual Academy Awards Swag Gift Bag.  Given to nominees and presenters staying at The Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles…and to one lucky winner on This Little Parent Stayed Home National Podcast! Tune in LIVE!
Well it’s about time we were treated like ROYALTY!!
For many of us, the mega superstars that walk the red carpet on Oscar Sunday is the only royalty we will ever really know. Where my family lives, in SoCal, Oscar Sunday is practically a holiday. This time of year everyone around us has been scrambling for months to watch the nominated films in time to be able to have their true opinions for the big day. In our younger days, we always had at least 2 or 3 Oscar parties to choose from, and although some of them were black tie optional, the only clear option was the party with the least amount of “talkers”. Because as only the serious Hollywooders know, you don’t make a peep during a Royal Superstar’s speech. It’s just… not…cool.
So when Lisa Gal, a new member of OurMilkMoney.com, superstar mom and owner of Hollywood Baskets, a custom gift basket delivery service, contacted me and told me she was in charge of handing out the Swag Party Favors for the red carpet walkers and presenters themselves… well, I knew that we needed to celebrate. Lisa will be a guest on the show next week, and in honor of Oscar week, she has VERY generously offered to give away one of her Swag Party Favors to a lucky listener of This Little Parent Stayed Home.
For those not familiar with the term SWAG- it stands for “Stuff We All Get”. Love that watch you saw on Clooney?  Want to get the same necklace as Charlise?  Wonder what was in all those swag bags on the arms of your favorite stars? Small and unknown companies have gotten mega-exposure in years past at the Academy Awards by using a cutting-edge marketing strategy of gifting and pampering celebrities and VIP’s. The baskets themselves, complete with the goodies inside can be worth anywhere from $2000- $50,000. This one is valued at OVER $7,000!!
I don’t know anyone more deserving of that kind of indulgence than the everyday parents of today’s society. The question is…who will the lucky winner be? The most votes wins the Swag Bag and the winner will be announced on the air on Friday, March 5. There is still time to enter and vote.
(Click here to enter) May the best parent win. I am so looking forward to tomorrow’s show!
Kindest Regards,
P.S. What does any of this have to do with our mission to support parents who want to leave their corporate jobs and stay home? Tune into the podcast find out.
Here is that bag of swag!!!
