5 Rules to Being a Part of the Self-Employed Movement

5 Rules to Being a Part of the Self-Employed Movement.

Parents, we are way too connected to ever feel alone again.

2 Nov

It’s not only children who grow.  Parents do too.  As much as we watch to see what our children do with their lives, they are watching us to see what we do with ours.  I can’t tell my children to reach for the sun.  All I can do is reach for it, myself.  ~Joyce Maynard

I have had the pleasure of connecting with thousands of parents in the last 4 years, and that number grows rapidly each day. One thing that remains consistent in what I have learned from you as parents: We really are more alike than different.

It should come as no surprise that we are motivated by the exact same thing:

Our love for our children.

We may be activated through different means of achieving our goals, different passions, career aspirations and lifestyle visions, but the driving force is still the same.

Why then, do we feel so alone?

Today there is a greater ability to connect with one another than in any past generation.

There has never been a better time for moms and dads to claim their place in society and earn their way to freedom, all while making a difference for our children and the future that awaits them. Thanks to the interactive media, gone are the days of the lonely house parent who has no means of connecting to other grown-up intelligence. We have resources!

We must realize our potential as a community, our power as consumers, and the promise for a significant impact by committing to COLLABORATION.

There is a science behind all of this and when closely examined, it equals progress.

This week, I am going to be introducing you to one of my most favorite people, Sundara Delphini. A single mom, a doctor of alternative medicine, an expert in spiritual wellness, and a master of energy and quantum physics. There is no better way to describe her… Sundara is a HEALER. Sports Widows, learn a little sports(wo)manship and you’ll score every time.

26 Oct

If life is a contact sport… just seize the remote.

I admit it. I am a disenfranchised companion of a hopeless sports fanatic. Every year during the baseball season and then during football season…and then again during basketball and hockey season, I become a sports widow. My usually amazing, supportive and attentive husband disappears into an alternate universe. He becomes engrossed in our TV and is oblivious to anything occurring outside of the flat screen. He is visually as well as audibly impaired and deprived of common reality. Not only do I lose my husband’s mental state to the sports world, I lose him emotionally as well. Suddenly his moods become dependent on how his team performed that day.

During the season, my family also gets to witness overly superstitious behavior bordering on OCD.  I don’t just mean wearing a favorite shirt or chanting a team mantra- I mean the belief that if he doesn’t eat the right food or sit in the perfect position- that he personally will have a negative affect on the outcome of the game.

If you would like to get back to loving your man (rather than loathing the Super Bowl)  rest assured- help is on the way. I cannot wait to bring on our special guest of the week, Leah Jantzen- a fellow Toginet host, stay-at-home mom, life coach, and brilliant expert in helping the abandoned sports wives become abundantly sports savvy. We’ll be discussing how to meet your sports-a-holic half way,  how to find your inner sports fan amid the sports aversions you think you might have, and how to use these televised sporting events to work to your advantage. Wouldn’t it be nice to talk with other grown-ups… like a grown-up?

30 Aug

Break out of the kid talk and find your grown-up voice.

You might be an ideal employee, or a rock star business owner. You may be creative, innovative, organized and skilled, but there is no way around it. If you are going to venture into business for yourself, you are going to have to talk to other people.

If you are shy, lack confidence in your communication skills, or seem to have forgotten how to speak “grown-up” since becoming a mom, then this is the show for you! Lets brush up on those conversation skills and get comfortable talking again.

This week I am bringing on a dynamic guest,  Robyn Hatcher, the founder of SpeakEtc., a communication and presentation-skills training and coaching company that helps clients develop presence through communication. We’ll also talk about how to polish the non-verbal elements of communication – body language, gestures, vocal quality and unlike many other presentation coaches Robyn works equally on the verbal skills– word choice, content and organization so that clients become more powerful and engaging communicators. Her unique approach identifies and works with client’s strengths, core values, and passion.

The Business of Being YOU

30 Aug

Being you. Nobody can do it better.

Oh sure, you might think you’d be better in business if you were someone else. With someone else’s education, someone else’s money, or someone else’s connections. But that is not necessarily true. You are right where you are today because you are …you.

Learning to embrace our best attributes (and forgiving some of our worst) allows us to be fully present in our business experiences, offers us more authentic relationships and stops the dreaded “If I was someone else…” head trip that can sabotage our success.

There is no one better to help us with this lesson than the amazing Jess Weiner. A friend and colleague, Jess is dynamic at giving us the gift of loving ourselves.

Strength of Purpose in Your Role as a Leader – With Special Guest, Susan Lyne

30 Aug

Don’t let your visions of success frighten you.
As parents and business leaders, we are also visionaries… and that can be overwhelming for those of us balancing a full schedule of family, home and business. Making room for our own sense of purpose can feel irrepressible and disorganized…until we see an example of someone who has already achieved the kind of success we’d like for ourselves.

Last week, we talked about surrounding ourselves with positive people and how that can create a clear path to victory. This week I’d like to talk about adopting behaviors and philosophies of those we admire and look up to.

For this very in depth look at ourselves as front runners in our own ambitions, I am bringing on a woman who I have admired for years, Susan Lyne.

When I first met Susan, I’d just about had it with corporate jobs, the temping pool and narrow-minded bosses. I might have completely lost my faith in the American workplace as well as in my own ability to deliver adequately as an employee. I had been knocked down too many times for instinctively wanting to streamline and push boundaries, and was nearly convinced that it was not possible to satisfy any employer, let alone my own career aspirations…which were becoming more and more unclear to me.  I needed a role model. Someone to look up to who would show me that it is possible to lead a dynamic team without sacrficing integrity, and one that would transform my outlook to a more positive one.

At the time Susan was the President of The ABC Television Network, and my temp agency assigned me to answer her phones for a half a day – which turned into 7 fantastic months working for a woman I grew to admire, aimed to be like, and would eventually turn to as a cherished mentor.

In that 7 months I learned how a great leader leads, the inter-workings of the entertainment Industry, conversed on a daily basis with Hollywood celebrities, television executives and creatives, and best of all -  it was the beginning of my growth into a new version of my best self.  It was the beginning of my new career as a free thinker, visionary and eventual leader, myself. Thanks to Susan, I began to believe in what I could contribute to my own life as well as with others.

This week, I am beyond thrilled to be interviewing my role model, Susan Lyne – an empowering leader, a dynamic media guru, and terrific mother and wife. Currently Susan holds the position of CEO at The Gilt Group.

About Our Guest

100_lyne.jpg

Susan Lyne serves as Chairman of Gilt Groupe. Susan joined the company as Chief Executive Officer in September 2008, less than a year after Gilt’s launch as a women’s apparel and accessories business.

Today the company has over three million members, 500 employees and operates six distinct business lines in the US, as well as the leading flash sale site in Japan. Lyne assumed the role of Chairman in September 2010.

From November 2004 to July 2008, Ms Lyne was President and CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (MSLO). In that capacity, she steered the company’s recovery and return to profitability, led by a three-fold increase in advertising revenue and the diversification of its merchandising business.

Before joining MSLO, Susan spent eight years at Disney/ABC, rising to President of ABC Entertainment where she oversaw the development of shows such as Desperate Housewives, Lost, and Grey’s Anatomy. Prior to that she ran the network’s long-form division, fielding a schedule of original movies and miniseries that won time periods and earned numerous awards.

Ms Lyne’s early career was spent in the magazine industry. She was managing editor of New Times and later of The Village Voice and, in 1987, created and launched Premiere magazine for News Corp.

Ms. Lyne serves on the board of AOL and is a trustee of The New School. She lives in New York City.

Who do you have on your “Support Staff”?

30 Aug

We are very affected by the energy of the people who surround us… especially the people who we love most.

It’s not the easiest thing to admit, but often it is the support (or lack thereof) from our friends and family members who make or break our success. These characters are only fragments of the people we love most and our need to impress them is fabricated by our own insecurities and fears. When we are working overtime to appease them, we become unclear about our own intentions and consequently deny serving our happiest self. Our inner voice becomes silenced.

On the other hand having a strong support base, fans who adore you and are rooting for you, can make a terrific impact and result in acheiving your ultimate reality.

Then again, who in this whole wide world doesn’t have complicated relationships?

This week we’ll be talking about finding your peeps, and conditioning your “habitual relationships” to be more optimal, more productive and more worthy of your love and attention.

Joining us this Friday is Cindy W. Morrison, former news anchor and investigative reporter, now a social media strategist and author of her latest book: Girlfriends 2.0. She will be joining us to talk about SOCIALVENTION: How to reboot, upgrade and reinvent yourself.

In addition, I will be welcoming a fantastic new “co-host for a day” to share the airwaves this week: Patty Lennon! A coach for moms and the founder of MOM GETS A LIFE, Patty is the perfect complement to the show this week. Moms, we’ll be talking about how to become more clear in how to serve your deepest needs, stay true to your essence and fall back in love with your purpose on this planet.

“We can’t afford to renew your contract.” Those words from her news director changed Cindy Morrison’s life forever. Refusing to be labeled a “has been” because of corporate downsizing, the Emmy-winning TV anchor and investigative reporter reinvented herself in record time. Cindy’s honesty about her layoff and witty style of reinvention struck a chord across the country—and today she’s a sought after speaker and her book “Girlfriends 2.0″ sold more copies in just the first month than the vast majority of first time authors ever sell!

Now Cindy uses her powerful message and social media savvy to guide others to successfully reinvent themselves with her SOCIALVENTION programs. She coaches entrepreneurs to corporate executives to reboot, upgrade and reinvent by using powerful tools like social media, branding and video presence. Tory Johnson, the founder of Spark and Hustle and the workplace contributor on Good Morning America calls Cindy her favorite social media strategist and Stiletto Magazine named her one of the Top 25 Most Amazing Women in America. Cindy’s story has been featured everywhere from FOX News to CBS’s “The Talk” and The Wall Street Journal to the Times Square Gossip page.

Redefining Motherhood

30 Aug

We’re All in This Thing Together

In the year 2000, my husband and I were blindsided by a home invasion. This shocking event would change us as the people we once were. Or should I say…. thought we were! We were instantly transformed into irrational human beings. It distorted our view of the world around us. How would we be altered because of this? Would we be able to stay sane in an insane world?
My beliefs before this home invasion were that everything was going to be story–book perfection.  I had already had my life systematically planned out, complete with an organized time-line. You see, as a little girl, like so many other little girls, I always dreamed of marrying my prince charming and living happily ever after. I even designed the wedding in my head with exact precision. Right down to the last hand-sewn pearl on my dress. My perfect husband and I would get married and have 2.4 beautiful children. Twins, plus point four. When they were born, my husband would help with the care-giving of these little bundles of joy equally. Fifty-Fifty. And life would be………
Wait.
Stop.
That was my fantasy world. In reality, it is much different.  Society has us believing that the mother should be the predominant care giver and have principal responsibility for the well-being of the child, while the husband hunts and gathers to bring home the pay dirt.
My guest has dispelled these beliefs and helps us understand that there is a better way.
Kristin Maschka will reveal her 4 Remodeling Tools to get the lives we want. In addition, we will be discussing ways for parents to allocate responsibilities equally and share in the contributions of the family’s financial security.
You do not want to miss a minute of this revolutionary show that is sure to start a movement of a new way of parenthood AND parenting.
Oh, and by the way…. that home invasion my husband and I had……it was our sweet, darling, beautiful, loving, little girl, Kourtney.

Placing your Products on the Shelves

30 Aug

The further the journey, the more you will enjoy the ride.
Its very easy for us to look at what we don’t  have. Its even easier for us to take a look at what everyone else has – but if you are looking for solutions, that is not the way to go about it.

I am constantly looking to align myself with people who are real go-getters. I am most inspired by those that possess a real human spirit and tenacity for life.  These are the people who I want to learn from, the ones who overcame a real struggle or unexpected curve ball thrown at them by life itself. The ones who never saw their lack of support or funding or less than desirable circumstances as an excuse to give up. These are the stories I get truly excited to share with you on This Little Parent Stayed Home, because they get you pumped up and feeling grateful for all the opportunity you already have.
Join me for a truly inspirational show on Friday when I introduce to you Vivian Tenorio, a brilliant and tenacious entrepreneur who quite frankly, never gave up her drive to put her amazing product on retail shelves everywhere.

About Our Guest

image2.jpgVivian Tenorio‘s belief in thinking that anything was possible if she just put her mind to it helped her deal with and hustle through the challenges she faced as a teenage mother, young wife and high school dropout. This no-limits attitude led Vivain to open a restaurant, start Signature Flan and eventually write her first book.

In 1993, Vivian was a 16-year-old high school student who became pregnant by her high school sweetheart whom she then married and is still married to 16 years later.

In 2005, after 6 years of working in the software industry, Vivian and her husband co-founded “Mofongo” which was a Puerto Rican restaurant based in Texas. The restaurant ultimately closed, but her dream of entrepreneurship did not die.

Later in 2009, Vivian decided she wasn’t comfortable with someone else calling the shots for her, so she started a new business venture, “Signature Flan.”

Getting her pink slip from her “other job” in 2010 was possibly the best thing that ever happened

to her. Vivienne is now able to follow her plans to create an online channel (http://www.viviantenorio.com/) where she

will interview other small business owners and industry professionals. Vivienne has plans to

continue her speaking engagements so that she can continue to share her story with others who wish to start a

small business and live a no-limits lifestyle.

This is the amazing story of overcoming personal fears and limited resources, using gut instincts, initiative and just plain hard
work to create a thriving business, as told by Vivian Tenorio, owner of Signature Flan LLC. Faced with the possible layoff
from a software company because of the weak economy, Vivian decided to take a treasured family recipe from her personal
kitchen and eventually establish nationwide distribution of her product to specialty stores, including Whole Foods Markets,
her first major buyer.
Follow her story as she overcomes the roadblocks that are put in front of anyone who attempts to start a business from
scratch. This book will inspire others to follow their personal dream of starting a business. The nuggets of information she
offers to the reader are priceless. A special gift from the author is a list of useful resources that she used in creating her
successful business. These hints will be a great aid to anyone who has aspirations of going into their own business and
could save hours of research time for those considering a new venture.
